A Proclamation by the Mayor of the Great City of .......................

WORLD UNITY DAY
September 11

Proclamation

WHEREAS, on September 11, 2001, humanity was shocked into awareness of the extreme danger to all who inhabit the planet; and

WHEREAS, the Earth has been darkened with the dust of injustice, division and disunity; and

WHEREAS, the world's equilibrium has been moving toward a state of instability; and

WHEREAS, the foundation of world peace has been built based on the principle of mutual mass destruction; and

WHEREAS, the universal light of the world's religions has been obscured by personal, political, and national interests; and

WHEREAS, technological advancement has connected the world's people; and

WHEREAS, scientific discoveries have led to the cure as well as to the creation of diseases; and

WHEREAS, the power of our diversity has been sapped by misunderstanding, misconceptions, prejudices and suspicions; and

WHEREAS, the roots of our common humanity have not been nourished and we have forgotten that we are brothers and sisters,

Now, the time has come for people of goodwill in the Great City of __________, regardless of race, religion, gender or nationality, to work together like the fingers of one hand, to cure the blight on our unity.

Now, we must arise to forgive and end the pattern of the past and start a new beginning.

Now, it is time to recognize and remind each other of our interconnectedness and interdependency, and the commonality of our needs, pain and joy.

Now, it is time to treat others as we ourselves would wish to be treated and embrace one another as brothers and sisters.

Now, it is time to see ourselves as organisms of one body. The injury of one is the injury of all; nourishment of all is justice for all.

Now, it is time to take the first step to establish the light of world unity.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, .........................., Mayor of the City of ..................... in the State of New York, do hereby proclaim September 11 as

WORLD UNITY DAY

and, in honor of those heroes who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom, I urge my fellow citizens in the City of Rochester to join the observances of World Unity Day to plant the seeds of unity in our hearts and in the heart of our community.

In WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused to be affixed the Great Seal of the City of .........................., this the Eleventh Day of September in the Year Two Thousand and Two.
